Until now there had never been a retrospective monograph dedicated to the Bergonzi family and in particular to Carlo, regarded as the last exponent of the classical period of Cremonese violin making. Of the fifty instruments known to us (forty-seven violins, one viola and two cellos) the exhibition dedicated to Carlo Bergonzi Alla scoperta di un grande Maestro (Cremona, Museo Civico “Ala Ponzone” 25 September – 10 October 2010) put no less than twenty-two on show to the public. This catalogue offers something more: twenty-eight instruments are presented with their related technical details, measurements and photographs. This technical documentation is preceded, as usual, by substantial historical and analytical essays regarding Carlo Bergonzis construction technique (by Christopher Reuning), the life and workshop of the Bergonzi family, reconstructed from previously unpublished archives (by Duane D. Rosengard) and relationships with other contemporary Cremonese violin makers (Carlo Chiesa), as well as technical analyses of some important works by Carlo Bergonzi (John K. Becker). What emerges is a profile of a maker of top-quality violins, excellent both from the construction standpoint and in terms of their extraordinary acoustic qualities.
